Production and distribution region
According to article 3 of the 24 July 2009 Decree, which grants the DOC label for Grottino di Roccanova, the towns that have an interest in wine production are: Roccanova, Sant'Arcangelo and Castronuovo di Sant'Andrea. Roccanova is a small town of about 1600 inhabitants located in the province of Potenza at 648 metres above sea level. Our region includes many wooded areas, arable land and areas planted with vineyards and spans over an area of 61.63 km².
The vineyards can be found in the valley. This is where the grapes that are used in processing "Grottino di Roccanova" wine are produced. In 2000, this wine received the IGT label (typical geographical indication) and in 2009 the DOC (Controlled Designation of Origin).
The town of Roccanova has about 260 wineries, which are mostly family-run. They produce about 15,000 quintals of grapes which obtains a yield of between 65-70%, making around 10,000 hectolitres of wine .
According to a study carried out in 2012, yields are around 8 tonnes per hectare.
The Grottino wine is mainly sold on the local and regional market (95% of sales) directly through our company itself, retail chains or through restaurants. The remaining 5% is placed on the domestic and foreign markets (Ireland, Belgium, Austria). Our local markets mainly purchase "Rosso" wine in bulk. While the Italian and foreign markets tend to purchase bottled "Rosso Riserva" wines. Advertising channels that we use the most are via the internet, (online), in specialised magazines as well as in food and wine guides.
At our Chiaradia winery, through high-valued produce, we have always set ourselves the goal of enriching the Lucanian region, the Roccanova vineyards and the local wine excellence. Our wines speak of a history that has its roots dating back to the 4th-5th century BC. This has been proven by finding some artefacts in indigenous tombs which are now preserved in the National Museum of Siritide in Policoro.
It is with great passion and dedication that today we look towards the wine-making world, by respecting this tradition but without forgetting the technological innovation that has allowed us to produce wines of great intensity, such as the PGI Basilicata Don Josè Rosso and the DOP Grottino di Roccanova Ebrezza rosé.
